Tourist Attractions in Gaibandha
Gaibandha is one of the most famous settlements of North Bengal, a district located on the bank of the river Brahmaputra. It is located in the northern part of Bangladesh in Rangpur division.
Geographic Location: Kurigram and Rangpur on the north, Bogra and Joypurhat on the south, Jamalpur district, Teesta and Jamuna rivers on the east and Rangpur, Dinajpur and Joypurhat on the west.
Gaibandha is one of the most important districts of Bangladesh for its ancient history, culture and tradition. In 1875, the name of Bhabaniganj subdivision was changed to Gaibandha. It was upgraded to the district from sub-district in 1984.
There are many stories in the naming of Gaibandha. The name came from the word Gai (cow) and Bandha (cowshed). About 5000 years ago, the capital of King Birat was in Gobindaganj of Gaibandha. King Birat had about 60000 cows. A huge barn was constructed in an abandoned place for the protection of these cattle. Later Gaibandha name originated from this cowshed.
Several historic places of Bangladesh are located in Gaibandha. These places include Naldanga Palace, Bardhan Kuthi, Mir Bagan Mosque, Raja Biratnagar, etc. Tourism centers in this district include Balashi Ghat, Dreamland, Sarovar, etc.
