Rangpur is a north Bengal district and the divisional city of Rangpur division. It is also one of the old 21 districts of Bangladesh those were reformed in 1984.
Lalmonirhat and Teesta River is in the north of Rangpur, Gaibandha and Dinajpur districts on the south, Gaibandha, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts on the east and Dinajpur and Nilphamari districts on the west.
The name of Rangpur region came from the word 'Ranga.' The area was fertile in producing indigo. It is known from the history that the British East India Company started cultivating indigo in the subcontinent. Due to the fertile soil in this region, there was plenty of cultivation here. The local people called the indigo as Ranga. From Ranga, the region has been named Rangpur.
Rangpur District is a traditional township of northern Bangladesh. This district possesses a glorious history from the past. In 1687, an administrative Headquarter of the Mughals was established in Ghoraghat of this area. The peasant movement in Bengal in 1765 was started first from Rangpur.
The meeting of the peasant leaders of North Bengal was held here in October 1946 and the Tebhaga movement was started from here in November.
The district was reformed in 1984 resulting some new districts from it. The division of Rangpur has been formed in 2010 with 8 districts. Therefore, the district city is now an important city for administration, business, and transportation of Bangladesh.
There are several tourist attractions in this district including parks, ancient structures, and scenic spots.
The major attractions of the district are Tajhat Palace, Vinnojogot (entertainment park), Keramatiya Mosque, Hatibandha Tomb, Chiklir Beel, Rangpur Zoo, Mithapukur Mosque, Itakumari Landlord House, Rangpur Karmichael College, Begum Rokeya Memorial.
