Tourist Attractions in Noakhali

Noakhali is a district under Chittagong administrative division. It has an area of approximately 3600.99 sq km. It is situated on the south of Comilla district. Meghna estuary and the Bay of Bengal are located in the south, Feni and Chittagong districts on the east, Lakshmipur and Bhola districts on the west. The main rivers of the district are Bamani and Meghna.

The ancient name of this region was Bhulua. A large canal was excavated in 1660 to save this region from the devastating floods. This canal diverted the water flow from the Dakatia towards Meghna and Feni River. This new canal was called "Noa (new) Khal (canal)" in its local language, which resulted to be known as "Noakhali" by the course of time.

This is the only district of Bangladesh which has no city in its name. The district town of Noakhali is known as Maizedi.

Noakhali is a wonderful tourist center filled with culture and tradition. The lush green paddy fields, beautiful riverside, and the friendly local people can give anyone a great experience in this district.

Among the tourist attractions of this region, Nijhum Island has become much famous nowadays. Tourists visit this island and enjoy the unique natural beauty of this island throughout the year. The island has no wild animals except deer and buffalo and has approximately 35 species of birds.

There are some other archaeological sites located in this area that are great places of interest and worth visiting. Gandhi Ashram Trust is one of the most visited places of this district. The property of this trust was donated by the then landlord Barrister Hemant Kumar Ghosh during the visit of Mahatma Gandhi when he traveled to Begumganj sub-district in 1946. It has been turned into a memorial complex with a small museum inside it.
