Tourist Attractions in Bagerhat

Bagerhat is a district located in the southwest of Bangladesh under Khulna division. Gopalganj and Narail districts are located on the north of Bagerhat, Khulna on the west, the Bay of Bengal on the south and Pirojpur and Barguna districts on the east.

The location of Bagerhat district is on the southwest side of Bangladesh along the Bay of Bengal. It is not a very old land, but the history of the prosperity of this region is contemporary and inclusive in many ancient towns of the subcontinent.

The people of non-Aryans settled first in Bagerhat. These include Austrians and Dravidians from the Mediterranean Sea, and Mongolian Alpine, etc. 

Bagerhat was a subdivision when Khulna district was formed in 1882 with Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat subdivisions. On 23 February 1984, Bagerhat was upgraded to the district from the sub-division.

Bagerhat has many places of interest to visit. Some of those are as follows:

Shat Gabud Mosque (Sixty-Dome Mosque): It is an ancient mosque located in the southwest of Bagerhat. There is no inscription found on the mosque. So, there is no accurate information about who created or at what time it was built. However, the architecture of the mosque indicates that Khan-E-Jahan had built it. It is believed that he built it in the 15th century. It is one of the world heritage sites of Bangladesh declared by the UNESCO in 1983.

Khan Jahan Ali’s (RA) tomb: Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (RA) was a Muslim preacher and local ruler of Bagerhat. His other names include Ulugh Khan, Khan-E-Azam etc. Every day thousands of devotees come from different parts of the country and abroad to visit the shrine.

Some other interesting places are Sundarban forest, Mongla port, Reza Khoda Mosque, Zinda Pir Mosque, Bibi Beguni Mosque, Chunakhola Mosque etc.

Bagerhat is located 269km south of Dhaka. The district can be reached by bus/car that takes about 7 hours. There is no train service in this district. The nearest airport is in Jessore which is only 3 hours drive from Bagerhat.
