Tourist Attractions in Madaripur

Madaripur is a district under Dhaka division located in central Bangladesh. Faridpur and Munshiganj are located in the north, Shariatpur on the east, Faridpur and Gopalganj on the west, and Barisal in the south of this district.  

The area was named Madaripur after the Sufi saint in the 14th century Hazrat Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar (R). He came from a Middle Eastern country to proliferate Islam in this region. 

Madaripur was established as a sub-district of Bakerganj in 1854. It has been turned into an independent district in 1984. The historical Faraizi movement took place in Madaripur led by Haji Shariatullah (1781–1840). The district also has a great contribution to the War of Independence in 1971.

Madaripur has a great heritage of folklore culture. Many traditional cultures are still practiced here such as the songs of Gazi, Kirtan, Dhuan, etc. Many traditional fairs also take place here like the Trianath fair, Sankranti fair, Rath and Ganesh Pagal's Kumb fair.

The most visited attraction of this district is the tomb of Hazrat Shah Madar (R). His grave is located on the banks of the Arial Kha river. Thousands of people visit this place every year. There is also a mosque and a madrasa with the tomb.

Algi Kazi Bari Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Madaripur district is also an important place to visit. It is located in the village of Algi in Bahadurpur Union. About three hundred years ago, this mosque was built on the side of the Algi pond. Many people believe that a divine preacher came from an Arab country and made it.

Located in the center of Madaripur city, Shukuni Lake is one of the most attractive reservoirs in the district. The lake was excavated in 1943. The area of this lake is about 20 acres.
