Shariatpur District is an administrative unit of Dhaka division in central Bangladesh. It has an area of 1181.53 sq km. Its neighboring districts are Munshiganj on the north, Barisal on the south, Chandpur on the east and Madaripur on the west.
From the ancient times of history, this region was ruled by many lords and kings. It was under the rule of Banga in the early period. By the course of time, this area was administered by Guptas, Mughals and British.
This district was named Shariatpur after the leader of the Faraijie Movement and Islamic thinker Haji Sarayatullah. He was one of the great leaders who led the historic anti-partition movement of Banga in 1905 in the Bengal region of the British India.
This area was previously known as Palang under sub-division of Faridpur. Later it was upgraded to the district on 1984.
Although it was established as a district in 1984, the region has a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh from old times.
Most of the people living in this district are associated with farming. The productive crops include rice, jute, wheat, onions, sweet potato, tomato, etc. Of these, jute, onion, ginger, tomato are considered as major export products of the region.
Some of the major attractions of this district are:
Fatehjung Fort: The fort was built by the Mughal commander Raja Mansingh. When Raja Mansingh attacked Bikrampur, his fellow warriors were defeated by the King Kedar Rai and took refuge in Srinagar. Mansingh sent his troops to rescue them. As a result, a massive battle took place. Kedar Rai got injured in this battle and died. The fort of Mansingh is a mark of the battle.
Burir Hat Mosque: The Burir Hat Mosque in Sadar sub-district is very famous and a great symbol of Islamic architecture.
Modern Fantasy Kingdom: This is an amusement park located in Kedarpur union. Here has the largest aquarium of Bangladesh.
Other attractions are Lakarta Sikder House, Ponditshar, Hatturia Palace etc.

There is no train service in this district. The nearest airport is in Barisal which is located 2-3 hour drive away from Shariatpur.
