Munshiganj is a district located in central Bangladesh under Dhaka division. The neighboring districts of this region are Dhaka, Comilla and Shariatpur.
Munshiganj is a district of history and heritage. It is rich in all the branches of music, drama, dance, literature, and culture. The people of Munshiganj have a remarkable contribution to the great liberation war of Bangladesh. It plays a major role in the national economy of Bangladesh.
Munshiganj was a part of Bikrampur, the glorious place of ancient Bengal. Its old name was Idrakpur. It is said that during the Mughal regime, there was a person named Munshi Haider Hussein who was appointed as a commander by the Mughal rulers. The name of Idrakpur was changed after the highly respected and philanthropist Munshi Haider Hussein. In 1945, it was upgraded to a subdivision of British India for administrative convenience. On 1 March 1984, Munshiganj was transformed into a district.
As an ancient city of Bangladesh, Munshiganj has many historical sites. These are great places for the tourists. Two most interesting places of this district are Idrakpur Fort and Baba Adam's Mosque and Tomb. There are some other places of interest in Munshiganj such as the residence of the famous scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Basu in Sreenagar, the house of renowned scholar Atish Dipankar in Bajrajogini. The bank of river Padma is also a fantastic place for the nature lover which is located in this district.
