Tourist Attractions in Jhenaidah

Bounded by Kushtia, Magura, Jessore, Chuadanga and Chabbish Pargana of India, Jhenaidah is the gateway to the south Bengal. It is a district under Khulna division. Seven rivers flowing through this region are Begbati, Ichhamati, Kodala, Kopatak, Nabaganga, Chitta, and Kumar.

Nothing is known about the naming of this district. It is said that this area became famous for collecting shell for the production of pearl, lime and shell buttons. The local name of the shell is Jhinai. The name of the district has probably been derived from the words Jhinai (shell) and Daha (water bodies).

After 1757, Jhenaidah went directly under the British rule in 1781. In 1862 Jhenaidah was elevated to sub-divisional level. It had been a sub-division under Khulna until 1984. On 23 February 1984, it was upgraded to Jhenaidah district.

Jhenaidah region is a plain land. There is no mountain or hill in this region. There have no mineral resources in this district but the land is fertile for producing crops and other agricultural goods. 

The district is not a popular spot for tourism. However, there are several sites that are worth visiting. Those are as follows:

Gorar Mosque: The mosque is located at Belat Daulatpur village in the Barobazar Union. It is a unique example of Islamic heritage. There is a pond on the eastern side of the mosque.

Dattanagar Agricultural Farm: It is the largest seed production farm in Asia. Located in Maheshpur sub-district, the farm is established on three thousand acres of land. This agricultural farm is a fantastic place for outing.

Other attractions are Naldanga palace, Satgachia mosque, the ancient mosque of Barabazar, the tomb of Gazi-Kalu-Champabati, Shailkupa palace, Dhol Samudra pond, the residence of Lalan Shah.

Directions to Go

Jhenaidah is located 178 km southwest of Dhaka and takes about 6 hours by bus or car. The district is directly connected by road. Several bus services operate daily trips to and from Dhaka. There is no airport in this district. It can be reached by air via Jessore which is only 46 km away.
