Hussaini Dalan

Hussaini Dalan is one of the oldest structures and attractions in old Dhaka. It is also known as Hussni Dalan in Dhaka. According to Persian poetry, its pronunciation is 'Hussaini Dalan'.

The history of 'Hussaini Dalan' is 400 years old. The building is located on Nazim Uddin Road in old Dhaka. Following the inscription written on Hossaini Dalan, Syed Mir Murad constructed it in 1642. The building was built in memory of Hazrat Imam Hossein, the beloved grandson of the last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sm), who was defeated in 680 A.D. by the army of Yazid and accepted martyrdom along with his family in Karbala.

This Dalan is also called the house of Imam Bara or Imam. For the first ten days of the Islamic month of Muharram, the Shia community of Bangladesh celebrates the day of Karbala in different ways in Imam bara or Hussaini Dalan. They arrange many programs to commemorate the memory of Hazrat Imam Hussein (R)’s son Qasim and Hazrat Imam Hasan's daughter Fatema, Bibi Zainab's son, Aaun and Muhammad, and many others including Jaynal and others. These programs continue from the 1st day to the 10th day of Muharram every year. Muharram is the first month of the Hijri Calendar. Then on the 10th day which is known as Ashura Day, they arrange the Tazia procession, which is in fact, a memorial festival of mourning.

The main attraction of Hussaini Dalan is the Tazia procession on Ashura day. The Shia community gathers in this Imam bara or Hussaini Dalan every year to remember the tragic event of the martyrdom of 72 people including Imam Hossein in Karbala.
