Armenian Church

Armenian Church is situated in Armanitola of old Dhaka. A secluded place like this is very rare in such a city. This two hundred years old traditional church was built in 1781, which is still maintained by the remaining family members of the Armenians. The history of Armenians in Dhaka is inextricably linked to this church. The name of the place Armanitola has also come from the Armenians.

There was a clock house beside the church. It was built by Johans Paru Piyete Sarkis. It is known that the clock house was broken down by an earthquake in 1897. The 700-feet-long church has 4 doors and 27 windows. The chairs are arranged in rows in the long hall room. There are about one hundred Armenian graves around the church. The epitaphs show that these are almost 200-years old graves. Some of the epitaphs have beautiful quotes. For example, it is written in the epitaph of a young boy named Mac S Makartik that, "Hey Beloved, Don't Shed Tears for Me". Symbols of pirates are printed on many of the graves. It is heard that these Armenian sailors were killed by pirates. This is why their graves are marked with such signs. However, most epitaphs are cited quotes from the scriptures. Another remarkable epitaph is found on the grave of Catachick Avatik, where his wife referred him to be the "Best of Husbands".
