Tourist Attractions in Tangail

Tangail is a central Bangladesh district under Dhaka Division. Its area is 3414.35 sq km. Based on area, Tangail is the largest district in Dhaka division and the second largest based on population.

Until 1969 Tangail was a subdivision of undivided Mymensingh district. It was upgraded to the district in 1969. It is an agriculture based area. This district is situated on the banks of the Jamuna River, and the river Louhajang flows through it.

Tangail District is located about 100 kilometers from Dhaka. It is bounded by Mymensingh, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Dhaka and Manikganj.

Tangail is a traditional township. This community is a center of many traditional and folklore culture of Bangladesh. The district is famous in Bangladesh for its handloom industry, Jamdani saree (hand weaved women's wear), pottery and sweetmeats.

The name Tangail originates from the word 'Tangai'. According to the researchers, there lived a community called Mokla in Kagmari region. The chief of the Mokla was called 'Tangai'. Tangail was probably named after the word Tangai. However, historian Khandek Abdur Rahim mentions in his book 'Tangailer Itihash' (history of Tangail) that the origin of the name Tangail is from the phrase Tan (high) Aile (isle).

Tangail's popular places of interest:

Mahira Zamindar Palace: This palace was built before the decade of the 1890s with Spanish Cordova style architecture. It is one of the most visited landmarks of Tangail district. Currently, this palace is being used as the district’s police training center.

Atiya Jami Mosque: Atiya Jami Mosque is the most important archaeological relics of Tangail. Its location is in Dalduar sub-district, eight kilometers from Tangail city. People from all over Bangladesh visit this mosque every year.

Other attractions of Tangail are Elenga Resort, Madhupur National Park, Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, Dhanbari Mosque and Dhanbari Nawab Palaces.
