Located on the banks of Meghna, Shitalakshya, Arialkhan, and the old Brahmaputra river, Narsingdi is a district under Dhaka divison. The area of the district is 1,114.20 sq km. This district is located in the mid-eastern part of Bangladesh.
Narshingdi is surrounded by Kishoreganj on the north, Brahmanbaria on the east, Narayanganj on the south and Gazipur on the west.
It is said that in the ancient times this region was under the rule of King Narsingh. In the beginning of the fifteenth century, King Narsingh established a small town named Narsinghpur on the west bank of the old Brahmaputra River. The name Narsingdi was introduced under the name of it.
After the abolition of the Zamindari system, Narsingdi was once a police station in the district of Narayanganj. Later, in 1977, it was upgraded to a subdivision of Dhaka district. It has become a district in 1984.
Due to the improved communication system and location, the district has emerged as a district rich in agriculture, industry, economy, sports, and culture. A unique and noteworthy tradition of Narsingdi district is the weaving industry. Sheikhchar (Baburhat) of this district is known as the 'Manchester of the East' for the weaving industry.
Recently, nearly 3,000 years old civilization was found named Asimaraaja Garh in the area of Wari-Bateshwar of the district. This is one of the great places of archaeological interest of the district. It is probably a fort located under the ground. According to experts, it is about two and a half thousand years old.
Other interesting places of this district are Bir Shrestha (Martyr) Matiur Rahman Memorial Museum, Sonaimuri Tech, Bhai (brother) Girish Chandra Sen's Residence.
