Tourist Attractions in Naogaon

Naogaon district is an administrative region located in the northwestern part Bangladesh. This district is under Rajshahi division. The district was born in 1984 after the administrative reform. Prior to this reform, this region was a subdivision under Rajshahi district. 

Geographic Location: South Dinajpur (India) on the north, Natore and Rajshahi districts on the south, Joypurhat and Bogra on the east, Maldaha (India) and Chapainawabganj on the west.

The name of Naogaon has been derived from the word 'nao' (new) and 'gaon' (village). These words mean 'new village.' The new village that developed in the banks of Atrai river port area had gradually been transformed into Naogaon city and later in Naogaon district. On 1 March 1984, Naogaon subdivision was declared as a district with 11 sub-districts.

Naogaon district is an excellent example of communal harmony. Apart from Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, there are various indigenous communities such as Santal, Araon, Mahali, Munda, Bansafar, and Kurmi live together in harmony.

Places of interest: 

Paharpur Buddhist Vihar (Buddhist monastery): Paharpur is an ancient Buddhist monastery. It is also called Sompur Bihar or Sompur Mahavihar. In 1879, Sir Alexander Cunningham discovered this massive structure. In 1985 UNESCO recognized it as a world heritage site.

This monastery was built in the 770-810 century. Valuable stones, copper coins, and other materials are preserved in the museum located in front of the monastery.

Kusumba Mosque: The Kusumba Mosque is located at a distance of 33 km from Naogaon Sadar. The mosque was built during the rule of Ghiyas Ahmed Shah in the year 1558.
