Tourist Attractions in Meherpur

Meherpur is a border district of the western part of Bangladesh. It is bounded by Kushtia, Chuadanga district and West Bengal (India). 

In 1854 or 1857, Meherpur was established as a subdivision. There were five subdivisions of undivided Nadia - Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Kushtia, Chuadanga, and Meherpur. After the establishment of the subdivision, five sub-districts of Meherpur were included - Karimpur, Gangni, Tehatta, Chapra and Meherpur Sadar. During Partition of India in 1947, Karimpur, Tehatta, and Chapra were incorporated in India; only Meherpur subdivision was formed with Gangni and Meherpur Sadar. On 24 February 1984, Meherpur got the status of the district. There are three sub-districts in present day Meherpur district.

This district has approximately two thousand years old history and tradition. The history of this district has been very glorious, especially in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. The first government of Bangladesh was formed in Mujibnagar in this district. Many monuments have been built in this region from the ancient times. 

Because of its historical importance, Meherpur is an attractive place for the travelers. Some of the popular places of interest are:

Mujibnagar Memorial and the historic Amrakanon (mango orchard): On 17 April 1971, the first temporary government sworn in was held in the historic Amarkanon of Badyanathtala village under Meherpur Sadar. In this oath taking ceremony, various journalists from abroad were present to broadcast the formation of independent Bangladesh government. This event was stimulation to the freedom fighters. It also gave legitimacy to the legal system of Bangladesh. 

Mujibnagar Memorial has been built at the place of the historic oath-taking spot. Those monuments and historical Amarkanon attract the attention of the tourists.

Other attractions are Municipal Eidgah, Meherpur Shahid Memorial Museum, Architectural ruins of Amdaha village, Siddheswari Kali Temple, Amjhapi Nilkuthi, Ibrahimpur Park.
