Habiganj is an administrative district in the northeast of Bangladesh in Sylhet division. In 1984, it was turned into a district. Earlier it was a subdivision of Sylhet since 1874.
Geographic Location: Sunamganj and Sylhet districts on the north of Habiganj, the Tripura state of India on the south, Moulvibazar on the east and Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj on the west.
Habiganj is a historic township with the memories of the Saint Hazrat Nasiruddin, a follower of Sufi Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal. This region has been named after Habibullah of Sultanate dynasty. He established a Ganj (market) here and thus the area has been named Habib Ganj. Gradually the name turned into today’s Habiganj.
Habiganj is rich in mineral resources. A large amount of natural gas, oil and mineral sands are excavated from here. Three major gas fields of Bangladesh are located in this district – Bibiana, Rashidpur and Habiganj gas field. Mineral glass sand is available in some areas of this district. There is also a mineral oil field in Rashidpur gas field area which has an excavation capacity of 2500 barrels per day.
Various indigenous communities are residing here with their diverse culture. Different types of lifestyle, worship, customs, and tradition of these indigenous groups have made Habiganj district more famous.
