Baitul Mukarram is the national mosque of Bangladesh. It is situated at Paltan near Gulistan, at the center of Dhaka. It is known that the then Bawani family of Pakistan planned first to build a large mosque for a large number of devotees.

According to that source, the owner of the Bawani Jute Mills, Pakistan's famous industrialist Latif Bawani, and his nephew Yahya Bawani took the initiative of building the Mosque. In 1959, the initiative was taken to implement this plan by forming 'The Baitul Mukarram Mosque Society'. The design of the mosque was developed by the famous architect A H Tharani of Sindh.

The mosque has been designed in a different shape from other mosques. It is in the shape of the Holy Ka'ba of Makkah and has the capacity of 30 thousand devotees. No dome is added here like the other mosques.

Since March 28, 1975, the 'Islamic Foundation Bangladesh' has been maintaining the mosque. The area of the mosque was expanded in 2008 with the economic support of the government of Saudi Arabia.

At present, the Baitul Mukarram Mosque is an eight-storied building. There are Marketplaces and warehouses on the ground floor. The ground floor to the fifth floor is used for prayer. There are arrangements for women's prayer on the north side of the 2nd floor. The mosque can be entered from the north, south, and east side.

Every Friday, many people come from far away to pray Jumma prayers in this mosque. Many local and foreign tourists visit the Baitul Mukarram Mosque every day. It is within walking distance from Paltan or Gulistan.
