Niphamari is a border district in Rangpur division. It is located on the northwestern edge of the country with an area of 1821 sq km.
Nilphamari was formed in 1875 as a subdivision of Rangpur district and it was turned into a district in 1984. Among the sub-districts, Nilphamari Sadar is the largest (373.09 sq km) of the six sub-districts, and Saidpur (121.68 sq km) is the smallest.
The historic Tebhaga Movement (Equal distribution of crops) was spread in 1940 from this district. The indigo cultivation in British era was done widely in this district. Saidpur sub-district is well known for its railway workshop from the British period as the biggest railway workshop of this region was set up in Saidpur in 1870. Moreover, Saidpur was the largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. The first airport of north Bengal region was built in this district in Saidpur.
Nilphamari is an agriculture based district. 80% of the people of this district are dependent on agriculture. The main industries are weaving, rice, bamboo, cane, etc.
Nilphamari is surrounded by several rivers. It is a land of natural beauty. The district has many tourist sites such as Nilasagar, Uttara EPZ, Teesta Barrage, etc. Recently, under the supervision of the ministry of land and the district administration, a bird sanctuary has been established in this district. Apart from increasing tourism facilities, infrastructural development has also been achieved in Nilphamari.
