Tourist Attractions in Narayanganj

Narayanganj district is one of the oldest and most famous areas of Bangladesh which is an administrative region of Dhaka division of central Bangladesh. It is the second largest and one of the oldest river ports of Bangladesh. Known as the 'Dundee East' the district is just 30 kilometers away from Dhaka and on the outskirts of Dhaka city.

Neighboring districts of Narayanganj are: East - Brahmanbaria and Comilla, west - Dhaka, north - Narsingdi and Gazipur and south - Munshiganj.

In 1766, the Hindu community leader, Bikan Lal Pandey (known as Benu Thakur or Laksinarayan Thakur) took ownership of the region from the East India Company. He declared the market on the bank of Shitalakra as a trust property devoted the area to worship the hindu Lord Narayana. Later, this place was named Narayanganj by the course of time. The existence of a city called Narayanganj until the middle of the seventeenth and eighteenth century is not available on the map of ancient Bengal. The region was upgraded to the sub-division in 1947 and the district in 1984.

Narayanganj district has the potential to develop the tourism industry. There are numerous historical monuments, including Sonargaon Folk Art Museum, Panam Nagar, the Tomb of Bibi Mariam are located in this district.

The estuary of the river Meghna, Shitalakshya and Dhaleshwari is also a great place to visit in this district.

This district has one of the most attractive and most visited archaeological sites in Bangladesh – Sonargaon. Sonargaon was the ancient capital of Dhaka in Mughal era. A day trip to this area could be an enjoyable outing for the tourists.

Directions to Go

Before the construction of Dhaka-Narayanganj road and railway, the only means of communication between these cities was the rivers. Now it is accessible by road, rail and boat. The road distance from the capital is only 30 km that takes about one and half hour. Commuter trains run daily between these cities to carry people of these destinations.
