Netrokona is a border district located in the northern Bangladesh under Mymensingh division. Bordering Meghalaya of India on the north, the district is surrounded by Mymensingh, Sunamganj, and Kishoreganj.
Netrokona was a part of greater Mymensingh district. It was once known as Kaliganj. At 7-8 km northwest of the city, the first survey was conducted at the place called Natarkona. Later the subdivision headquarters were established in Natatkona. The name of Natarkona was later converted to Netrokona.
In the fourth century AD, this region was under the rule of Guptas. At the end of the thirteenth century, a Muslim ruler attacked the eastern Mymensingh region and established Muslim rule for a short time. During the reign of Alauddin Hussein Shah (1493-1519), the entire Mymensingh region was included in the Muslim kingdom at the end of the fifteenth century. Netrokona was declared subdivision of Mymensingh in 1880 during the British rule. The subdivision was declared district on 17 January 1984.
